Rhythmic displacement

We call rhythmic displacement a phrase which can act either as a repetition or as an answer, which begins in a different place in the bar preceded by a rest or by a note of long duration.

This displacement works as a recreation of the original idea, since it generates a new rhythmic feeling on occurring at a different place. This recreation may be more complex if we respect the figures in the original idea but vary its notes. Still, one must keep on mind that if the variation of notes is exaggerated we run the risk of losing the effect, since the similarity of the idea will not be noticed.

In improvising, we often use regular displacements (of two quarter notes) which will appear in places at the beginning of the phrases, with the same stress (strong or weak), while the weights of one or three quarter notes (irregular displacements) will change the stress and the rhythmic sense of the phrase will be lost.

Both in regular and irregular displacements, one will have to be especially careful that the repetition of a displaced idea in the bar does not make us lose our position in it (the first time of each bar).
